The 19-year protest against the persecution of Falun Gong

By Sophia Sun

On 5th June 2002, practitioners of Falun Gong - a spiritual movement combining slow-moving exercises and meditation - began a peaceful 24 hours a day, seven days a week protest outside the Chinese Embassy in London.

They wanted to draw attention to the group’s persecution in China. Their members had been imprisoned and tortured. There were reports that some had died in custody.

Nineteen years later, the protest outside the embassy continues as the situation in China remains unchanged. Sophia Sun meets practitioner and protestor Yudong Gao to hear her story.
